Cindie Colbert, Lansing Operational Excellence Manager, volunteered in October with 4 Wheel To Heal, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving wounded and disabled Military Veterans. They provide unique off-road adventures to Veterans with a purpose to boost morale through unforgettable experiences.
Cindie volunteered with 4 Wheel to Heal (4W2H) at their Fall event in Utah.
What were some of the adventures you experienced with these Veterans?
The Warriors played in a golf tournament, toured the canyons of Zion National Park, were passengers in four-wheeling Jeeps, got to drive ATVs through dunes, and attended a Montgomery Gentry concert. The Warriors were honored at a gala dinner during the week.
Why is this organization personal to you?
I have been surrounded by Veterans and active Military personnel my whole life, including being raised in Virginia Beach. My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII. My uncle is a disabled Vietnam Vet and my father is a retired Navy Officer. I was a Navy wife, and my son is serving in the Navy. After participating in several (4W2H) events in 2017 and 2018, I became a Board Member in 2019.
How powerful was it to hear the Warriors’ stories?
There are no words to describe it!
Some are quiet until they are in a group of their peers. Then they light up because they feel more comfortable sharing.
Some are so inspirational and happy to be alive. They don’t take a minute of their lives for granted. Some carry survivors’ guilt with them. Regardless, they will all tell you they’d serve all over again. They know they helped save lives. Sitting in their presence helps you appreciate everything you have in life.
Is there a moment volunteering with 4W2H that stays with you?
A few years ago, at an event, Tim, a triple amputee (both legs and an arm) got to the destination at the top of the dirt path without his electric wheelchair. His message was: “I’ll always find a way”.
Tim doesn’t let anything stop him from living his life to the fullest. He truly embraced what happened to him moving forward with unbelievable energy. Tim’s attitude changed my life.
What would your message be to other associates about the importance of volunteering?
You never know the difference you can make. We’ve been given an amazing opportunity to give back to our communities without having to sacrifice a day of pay for it. Take time to volunteer at a school, a church, a community center, a library, an animal shelter, or a hospital. Every minute of your volunteer hours adds up to help make the world a better place.
