A Run to Remember

George Harvey runs to remember—and more importantly, to never forget.

For the second year, the Danbury and Norwalk Branch Manager joined his daughter, Julia, in the Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K Charity Run/Walk in New York City. The event honors the 343 FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

“Having worked in NYC and lost colleagues in one of the towers, and many neighbors who didn’t come home, this is the most inspirational and humbling run I’ve ever done,” said Harvey.

Held annually on the last Sunday of September, the event raises funds for programs supporting first responders and injured service members.

Harvey recalled a moment during the September 28 run that deepened his appreciation for those who serve. “About two miles in, I looked around and saw firefighters running in full bunker gear—jackets, pants, boots. It was humbling to think of those who ran toward the Towers that day and then climbed countless flights of steps to rescue others. Their dedication puts everything in perspective.”

For Harvey, the run is more than a fundraiser—it’s a tribute. It’s a way to ensure the sacrifices of 9/11 are never forgotten.

“Running with my daughter has helped instill a sense of service in her. Participating in this event is a duty and a way to honor those who didn’t come home that day.”
